Important breakthrough in antibacterial coating of ureteral stent

Recently, the research results of "a hydrophilic lubricant coating with intelligent urease-responsive antibiotic release function" jointly developed by Professor Chen Gang's team from the Department of Urology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, in collaboration with Sichuan University and others, were recognized in the internationally renowned materials It was published in the scientific academic journal "Advanced Functional Materials". The coating uses urease produced by bacterial proliferation as a trigger signal to release antibacterial drugs on demand, thereby preventing ureteral stent-related complications.

It is reported that ureteral stents are urology products widely used in clinical treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the urinary system, such as stones, strictures, and tumors. However, long-term indwelling of ureteral double J stents can lead to complications such as infection, scab, and ureteral mucosal damage, and may lead to ureteral obstruction, renal insufficiency, and even renal failure, thereby seriously damaging the patient's health and quality of life.

Infection and crusting caused by ureteral stents are often associated. According to literature reports, in cases of short-term use of pigtail drainage catheter (ureteral stent), about 10% to 50% of patients will develop urinary tract infection 1 week after stent implantation, while the infection rate of long-term (more than 30 days) indwelling ureteral stents is close to 100% . Bacterial biofilms that develop after infection can promote the precipitation of crystals, leading to scabbing. Surface infection and scabbing of ureteral stent are thorny problems that need to be solved urgently in clinical practice.

To solve this clinical problem, Professor Chen Gang's team collaborated with Sichuan University and others to develop a hydrophilic lubricant coating with intelligent urease-responsive antibiotic release function. The coating uses urease produced by bacterial proliferation as a trigger signal to release antibacterial drugs on demand. Research results show that the surface-modified ureteral stent using this coating can achieve long-term inhibition of infectious scabbing in a porcine model, which can effectively prevent ureteral stent-related infections and reduce friction-related complications.

Professor Chen Gang introduced that the intelligent lubricating coating provides an effective surface modification method for ureteral stents, thereby preventing complications related to ureteral stents. Professor Chen Gang and his team are actively cooperating with relevant departments to carry out clinical translation of the results to promote this technology into clinical practice as soon as possible and bring benefits to more patients.
